Blog #5 Writing Progress - Yupeng Yang

After seven weeks English study, I realize the progress on my writing, though it is still difficult to explain my ideas in a second language sometimes. In my first language, I could easily write an essay without mistakes in grammar. Actually, there are not so many syntaxes in Chinese as in English; it is rare to have that kind of mistakes which always happens to my English writing. In my view, my summary skill improves a lot. You cited the first part of my midterm work as an example showing in the class. In the first two summaries, I always neglected some details of the original, or make up the main ideas in a wrong order. Noticing that, in the exam, I highlighted the key words of every sentence, and put those with similar meaning together to make up a complete claim sentence using summary reminder. However, I still need to work on with the usage of preposition. I usually search the verb on the COCA website to solve this problem.

In my digital story script, I narrate how I chose my major and my career in food. First, I introduce my growing background, explaining why I’m interested in this field; then, discuss how the interest grows and how it influence my life. In the second part, I elaborate on what I did in my previous major which is related to my current major Food Science, and what I imagine my future job will be. Following, I introduce a book as a guide in cuisine. It impresses the reviewer of my script deeply. I draw a conclusion and express a wish in the end of the story. I describe many details in the article to make it more substantial and interesting. My story is full developed and considered as an engaging one to myself.
