In the first paragraph, include a picture you downloaded(include the URL) and explain why you chose this picture, what the source was, and what types of IP usage you had to consider. How did it enhance your story? How was this similar to and different from using sources and citations in your writing? In the second paragraph, discuss the value, in your opinion of the digital storytelling assignment. Was it helpful in bringing you a deeper understanding of intellectual property usage and technology? How did you find the process of putting pictures together similar to or different from using sources? How was the consideration of culture important in both writing and DST? (250-300 words)

The digital story that I watched is "The Trail" which posted on http://digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/personal/ and prepared by Cindy Gray. Why I choose this video because I like this digital story name, though this name very simple but I think we can find a deeper and meaningful aspect from this name. the digital story describe the author playing with her friend and walked the horse at a slow pace through the trail. The trail has many trees on its two sides. The author likes to step on the fallen leaves, listen to birds singing and view the yellow leaves. The author introduce an interesting example one time, the author lost the way back to home in the forest with her friend. But the author believed she could find the way back to home. In finally she fined a way arrived home before sunset conformed to her friend. In the end the author enjoyed herself life everyday.

The author cues from the trail, the digital story has two details, the first one is she uses her hiking experience to describe the trail in the forest all along the trail purify our soul. The second one is the author the happening of difficulties and hardship in trail. So through two details, the purpose and the meaning are very deep. Also the author used many great picture, like fallen leaves, the trail and walked the horse. I like these picture cause these exactly match very turning main point in this story. In the same way the author used a nice music, you will be personally on the scene through this music. The author pronunciation is very good, she speaks clearly and very adapt to the digital story expressive emotion. Of cause this digital story is very wonderful.

The story “Outside the Glass”, by Golden Jackson, mainly talks about one of her life-changing stories. According to the video, Golden Jackson was invited by one of her former students to teach a community service class. As she believed that the service could intensify students’ learning, she encouraged the students to challenge themselves, and broaden their horizons. She also put the ideas into action on her own. She and her colleagues developed a course specially tailored for preparation purposes. During the education process, she actively interacted with the students and the local community. This opened up new sources of knowledge and allowed her to embrace new ideology. While from students’ write-ups, she also discovered a rich knowledge of local community. In the end, the author concluded that such learning method is effective and should be promoted.

In general, the story is well developed. It is interesting to use the “Glass” as a metaphor to express the author’s emotional changes upon her experience. Her voice is clear and easy to listen for international students, but it may be a little slow when it comes to the local students. It is good to add others’ voice to make the video vivid, but it is too much, and the story becomes unorganized to some extent. Besides, the story is a little boring without any music during narrating. I recommend that she could add some parts of music to animate the video. The pictures are good. They are helpful to express the author’s idea, especially implicit images, such as the notebook indicating the writing. However, some of them are not match to the story in the end of the video. She could probably change these pictures. She also needs more work on the transitions. It would be more coherent and flowing.

The digital story "Overdue" by Megan Tryoyer under the Personal catagory (URL: http://digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/personal/) mainly delineate the life of Megan, a born and bred Buckeye, as an student emplyee in CIO. She demonstrate that she was fortunate and happy to eventully graduate from OSU, like her parent did, and her career life had changed since the first day she met with Dr. Bob, the previous Chief Research engineer. In addtion to the valuable memories, Megan showed her happiness to keep pursuing her child-like passion to get things done in CIO just like Dr. Bob did.

Generally speaking, Megan did a great job on her digital story telling, especially on her fluent english speaking and clear pronounciation. Besides, the vivid pictures and the backgound music she used in her video dazzled me as well. For instance, OSU carmen is the the typically symbo to express her excitement to be a buckeye. Additionally, she used the picture of two polar bears hugging together to express the deep expectation to Dr. Bob, at the same time, the picture of sunset just properly create the sad atmosphere after she mentioned the retirement of Mr. Bob. Despite of that sparkling parts, there are still some drawbacks in her vedio. For exampel, as a viewer, I am extremely looking for some interesting sepecific stories happend between her and Dr. Bob that changed her life so much, but unfortunately, she didn't mention any of them. So, this digitalstory would so much better if she providing more specific examples. But, however, I do like this video anyway and also, it provide me with something new in my mind.

The video I watched on digitalstory.osu.edu is "The Trail", made by Cindy Gray. This video explores the word "trail" from a deeper and meaningful aspect. The author illustrates that the trail we go through when we go hiking can be viewed as the trail in our life. She uses her hiking experience to describe the real trail in the nature at the beginning. The leaves, woods and the nature sound in the forest all along the trail purify our soul, as she said. Then she exemplifies her trip and getting lost on the trail which indicates the happening of difficulties and hardship on our way. Another significant idea she demonstrates is sharing the trail—sharing the time, the joy, with different people in different time period on our way, so that we won’t be alone on our trail anytime but we have to face the leaving and coming of different trail sharers.

This digital story is just perfect on every aspect. The purpose and the meaning are very deep since she uses the thing that comes from our daily life but gives it a special meaning and her thought of life in it. Also, her work is great at the picture choosing and editing portion. I love those pictures which were taken from the ground to view the tree and leaves on the ground, and the leaves floating in the water. The transitions of the pictures are very professional and they exactly match every turning point in her story. Her voice is peace which fits the mood of this story perfectly, and she speaks clearly with good pace. Last but not the least, her story is well-written and has proper details such as her feeling of the trip, others’ help to get her out of the missing trail, and her equine. If I have to point out some disadvantage of this digital story, it would be the tripping scene video piece is too long and actually not a joy for eyes since it made me feel dizzy. Anyway, this is a successful digital story telling example.

The digital video Overdue by Megan Troyer http://digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/personal/ describes the link between the OSU and the her and the memorable time she spent with Dr. Bob. Megan is a “born and bred buckeye” who claimed the OSU had already in her blood. To broaden her horizon, she took a student position in the CIO. At that office, she met Dr. Bob, the person who changed her life. Megan enjoyed in working with Dr. Bob so much that did not want to leave her position after graduated. After Dr. Bob retired, the admiration for his working ability and the child-like enthusiasm for working is still the Megan’s motivation for working in the OSU.

In my opinion, this digital story is successful one. Megan established her link with the OSU at the beginning of the video by using the sentence “The OSU is in my blood.” And then gradually express her admiration for the Dr. Bob. But if she could present her honor to Dr. Bob at the beginning to make the main idea of the video stand out more, the purpose will be clearer. Moreover, Megan’s voice is very clear and the speed is appropriate too. Her passion to OSU is thoroughly expressed through the rhythm and notes of the background music. She has inserted a lot of expressive pictures which help the main idea of the video stand out. The meaning of the video is transformed by the use of implicit and explicit images. For example, the image of the sun set with a tree shadow has compared the retirement of Dr. Bob and the “O-H-I-O” picture to present OSU. However, as a viewer, I am eager to see some pictures that Megan and Dr. Bob took together. Generally speaking, it is a good story which can attract audiences’ attention.

My view about “Outside the Glass” Zebin Chen

Golden Jackson, in the digital story “Outside the Glass” (http://digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/community/) presents the importance of survey through the experience which her friends and she educate students the courses about surveys in Honduras. Although it is challenging for them to move from familiar, comfortable condition to poverty area, they contribute to improve learning skills of students with aids by guiding them doing surveys and provide them courses such as community development and transmission of HIV. Meanwhile, they enlarge their scope of views from information showing by students and local citizens. At the end of the story, she maintains that survey play an important role for people to have a deep understanding of community and it is valuable experience to do surveys in varied areas.
As far as I am concerned, the digital story shows us the experience Jackson had in Honduras and then come up with the main idea. I believe it is better to present the purpose at the start and prove it by her experience about teaching students survey courses because it is easier for audiences to grasp the main point of the story. However, it is still an excellent story because of its engaging content which stimulates us to develop thoughts about the significance of doing surveys from different perspectives. The point impressing me most is the different voice provided by her students, which is more vivid to show the knowledge they got from their students and makes it interesting to listeners at the same time. Proper amount of details were offered to support it. Furthermore, it is smooth through the whole story with clear voice. But I recommend her to add some soft music when narrative her experience in Honduras. Both explicit and implicit images are used and these images match well with content, which helps to involve audiences in the story.

The digital story I want to choose place story, which is “Finding home” http://www.storycenter.org/stories/index.php?cat=8by Ta Kwe Say claim that his travel as his refugee life in Burma that his father is an alcoholic and his mother and he get away from his father when he was six. When he goes to school, his mother moves to US as a refugee. People in Karen didn’t have rights, such as education and jobs. As refugee they need to live in jungle and hide. So, his uncle take him to Thailand, the same as Karen, he also needs to live hide, because of he is illegally. He is very missing his mother that he takes picture every day. In the airport, he sees lots of refugee who has some sick. So he flew alone to Seattle. He recognize his mother through the picture when he out in the hall.

In the whole video, he just uses two pictures, which can identify his family. Always he uses lots of black and write picture, which are very lonely. I think he can use some another picture, which has three people, for instance, mother, father and child. It can compare with his picture, not just use some desolate pictures, because his story detail and his tone already can represent he is a pitiful boy. So using some comparison of methods can render his story. The picture is not very clearly; I just see profile of people. About his speaking is dull, I think it is not infections enough. Maybe when he wants to say his father is an alcoholic man, he can use tone with a hate. And when he refer to his mother he can use tone with a desire, because he miss his mother every day, he needs to express it. I am not sure that he uses dynamic menu, which wants to express his lonely at the end. From the visual point of view, it is not good enough, moreover, just using his leg to make dynamic menu, it will be chaos. But this is a truth story and he is a real man that he can overcome all the things. I am very admiring him.

“The Oxford English Dictionary” talks about the origin and editing process of probably one of the most time-consuming dictionaries. The speaker has a strong stance, “letter makes words, words make languages; words change all the time, languages change all the time.” It well illustrates the connections between words and languages, and put emphasis on time’s strong influence on language. Some members in a philological society first came up with the idea of writing a dictionary, and trying to determine every word’s origins and changes of meanings. It includes 15 volumes and takes almost a hundred years to finish. James Murray was the chief editor. Even J. R. R. Tolkien was employed by the OED as assistance. The process of editing is hard, editors used quotation slips to write down useful paragraphs, the amount is up to 1.8 million. Nowadays, the situation is different. New words or meanings popular in songs, magazines or TVs all have a chance to appear in dictionary. In the end, the speaker restated her stance, “languages change all the time”.
In my opinion, this video’s purpose and stance are quite obvious to readers. The story flows well, as a viewer, I can easily get her point and catch up main idea. The topic is also thought-provoking, how people made a dictionary that covers each word’s origin at a hundred years ago, and how the situation changed in modern society. The recording of voice is good, however in some places the speed is a little fast. Also, the background music is a little loud. The use of image needs some improvements, some pictures occur more than one time.

The digital story “Flee bitten” made by Randall Hicks, posted on http://digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/personal/ presents an amazing experience of author who beaten by ukulele, an instrument very similar to a small guitar. Hicks was captured by ukulele in his trip during a remote island. Jumping flea, The English name of ukulele, take author a lot of time to learn it by himself. At the end of video, Hicks can plays it well.

I consider this video is really virtuous at its structure and purpose. Everything is fluent so audience can easily get author’s purpose and mood. On the other side, it’s also an engaging story. I haven’t heard such instrument before. However, the sound and appearence of ukulele is fascinating. ukulele looks like guitar, but smaller. Also it sounds sharper than guitar. For me, this story is really interesting for everyone who loves music. The only shortcoming of this story is its voice quality. Actually, I didn’t heard what he is talking about at 1:00 to 1:07. The other parts of this video are all clear and easy to understand. The music part of this video, I consider, is the best part of it because he mixes some music played by his ukulele. The video and images author used captured points every time. At last, the video and music author used illustrate he is not only good at playing ukulele, but also making other people enjoy in it. In conclusion, this is a good model for me to make my own digital story.

The digital story “Short North Obama Mural” (URL: http://digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/community/ ) discusses a story of painting a mural about Obama. In the digital story, the author talks about the design, the process of painting the mural. Lots of people came to see the mural and leave the mark around the mural. Although the author planned there would be 7 young men who will participate into painting the mural, there was only one young man came to participate. Moreover, the effect the mural brought to the author is the motivation of keeping the life moving. In the end of the digital story, there was a boy dancing in front of the mural to show that the mural is finished.

The purpose of the digital story is clear that is to state that the mural gives the author the power of keeping the life moving. The voice quality is wonderful, I can hear almost all the words the author said. The only sentence that I cannot hear clearly is the one in the middle part of the digital story. Images in the digital story are suitable. For example, she said that people were leaving marks on the wall, the picture was just the yellow one with a lot of marks. The way of flow used in this digital story is time flow. The author talks about painting the mural by describing different processes, each step has pictures to support, and the main idea infiltrate in the digital story. In conclusion, this is a good digital story.

Digital story Overdue by Megan Troyer (http://digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/personal/) describes her life at OSU and days spent together with Dr. Bob. Megan was born in Ohio and studied at Ohio State University. She took a job at office of CIO to broaden her horizon. She was not sure whether she could make herself into the office but succeeded eventually. The first day she worked there, Megan met Dr. Bob, who affected her life a lot. Regardless of the fact that he has retired, Megan still admires his working ability and great enthusiasm and she will keep these in mind in her own career.

Overall, this is a good digital story. It is a memorial story of Dr. Bob. It is interesting and also full of thoughts about life and career. For example, Megan illustrates the effects of Bob’s ability to get things done and child-like enthusiasm on her. The recording is good and she uses accents to emphasize something, like could NOT quit. There is one too long pause before talking about Bob’s retirement. Good pacing. The images are great, which are symbolic and match the story well. There is a picture of one bear and its baby when she discusses Bob. The bear seems to be teaching the little one, which symbols Bob’ influences on her. However, I think that she is supposed to use some pictures of her own. The video is too short. Audiences expect a longer one which introduces her life and time with Dr. Bob in detail.

The digitalstory ‘What You Wanted’ is a story made by Genevieve Gritel which she used to commemorate her father who died because of heart attack. Genevieve’s father is the first college student of their family.  He liked to teach her baby daughter chemistry knowledge when she is young.  After his death, she felt the shift so sudden and her father is still alive last second.  She took her father’s chemistry book and get into the same college- The ohio state university, major in chemistry, which her father considered to be her favorite.  But she changed her major and tried several major in 5 months and finally stopped at English.  From time to time, Genevieve can recall the last conversion she had with her father.  ‘How are you doing?are you happy?‘ He told her that ‘ you have to live for your self, not someone else.’  But she wanna know how will her father say when he find her departed the science he thought her loving and his favorite.
In the story, Genevieve doesn’t say how much she miss her father directly.  But instead, she tells her own life after her father’s unfortunate death and, guess, image and curiously want to know his response. The viewers can feel the miss through her voice every time she opened her mouse and talk.  The background music is so harmonious to the voice and the emotion of her, single but includes a feeling of bule and sorrowfulness.  She shows few photos in her story, many of them appear more than once.  But this doesn’t make me tired of it. The photo’s from time to time appearances recall and arouse my sympathy once and more.  I can’t help but think how will I response if this sorrowful story happened to me.  However, I think more photos of their daily life can strengthen the feeling of viewer. This is a impressive, engaging and outstanding story. It touched the deepest part of my heart and left me a lot of thought, even after it ended, I can’t get rid of the sincerest sympathy.

Cindy Gary, the
maker of digital story “The Trail” posted in “http://digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/personal/”
this is a story talking with a place where she lived and how about her feeling.
It was a personal story what she played with her friends and a horse in the trail.
First, she described the scenery of the trail. There are a lot of trees on the
both sides of the trail, and with bird’s songs. It is really beautiful scenery
and the author even thought it refreshed her soul. Then, she talked her experiences
with her friends in the trail, they climbed the carve and lost their way, at
this time, they turn right and turn right, finally they find their way before
the sunset. As time goes by, her friend grew up and become old but the author
said she will always stay with him.

Although, it is a
personal story but it has a lot of details and supervises. The most important
thing is the author found a lot of images, and they are very close to the
story, of course, they are beautiful. The second thing is the music, when the author
told they lost their way, they music suddenly become a nervous melody, I think
it can attract the audiences. The final thing is when the author told the story
the images will change and the images are always press close to the story. In my
opinion it is a perfect digital story.

The digital story Outside The Glass made by Golden Jackson which posted on the digitalstory.osu.edu describes a story of serves-learning of serval students who tough course in Honduras. The author point out that she prefers learning outside and she can learn more than class. she likes chelleging herself and engaging a new adventure, They tough the students with HIVAIDS how to comminute and collaborate with others. She learned that she should be patient and community assets from students. she emphasizes the advantages of out-door learning.

This digital story has a outstanding topic and the author portray this topic in a appropriate way. At the beginning she point out the tital of this digital story and that makes me curious about what she is going to talk about. The voice of the author is smooth and the speed of portraying is appropriate and leaves time for thinking. However the pictures is not very absorbing. One thing to be mentioned is that the music at the beginning is very bright, the jazz music accord with the sound of author. However it is too abrupt that the author use others opinion and add something humor such as the crowing I know the author want to march the man's portray but it scrow up the color of this story.

The digital story “Overdue” made by Megan Troyer tells us that her passion on OSU and her respects to her professor Mr. Bob. She was born in Ohio and her parents also met at OSU. Her love to OSU almost can’t be described in words and ohio university is her blood. She mentioned that she is one of those who came and never left. She also took her dad’s entry job, as an officer in CIO. However, she begins her life in OSU is a position chief research engineering, she also believes that she can do that well. As most students do, she successfully graduated from that class. A man had a huge influence in her life, he is Dr.Bob. Although Dr. Bob will retire from his work, Megan still thinks that his spirit will affects her in her later career and she will take his responsibility as her rule. http://digitalstory.osu.edu/stories/personal/

To be honest, this is an almost perfect digital story for me. Her purpose is clear as her mentioned at the beginning of the story, Ohio state university is in her blood. The story is interesting. Through her words, I can feel her passion and enthusiasm with this school. Her voice is nice enough and very soft that can be an attractive point. The connection between image and voice is also very perfect. For example, when she said ‘ I finally graduated, it appears a cartoon which has a graduated student in it. When she said, the next statement for Dr. Bob can be described as retirement, it appears a setting sun picture which has a meaning of missing and passing. The use of implicit and explicit pictures are very good.
