Blog #4 - Plagiarism Tutorial

OSU ESL programs online plagiarism tutorial is a website which explains specific consequences of distinct choices about plagiarism. I chose question 3 and 6. According to question 3, sometimes we can make a secondary citation when it is too difficult to find the original article and there is too little resource for we to use. However, we cannot do this too frequently because we may be accused as commit plagiarism for didn’t indicate where we get the text. This is quite significant since there is a great risk for me to make this kind of mistake. Before I do this tutorial, I do not realize that I cannot cite the citations in articles. Question six is an interesting one, illustrating that professor do not have the right to copy or use students’ work. Everything students write belongs to themselves. This one really surprised me. I thought my teachers could use my papers or work as they want except making money. In China, my teachers often use us students’ work for their course.

Thanks for this website, I learned a lot about plagiarism in academic field. The most important point is always keep prudent and asking someone expert about citation like your professors. Never follow your own ideas indifferently and “my friends say” is dangerous. As an undergraduate student, the situation in question 1 is especially important for me. “plagiarizing for yourself” sounds really ridiculous, isn’t it? I never thought that I needed to ask my teacher’s permission to rewrite my own essay so it is easy for me to make mistakes. Developing academic integrity can benefit my later career in psychology. Psychology is the science needs to write a lot of paper and experiments so it is extremely crucial for me to possess comprehensive knowledge of plagiarism. I do want to be charged as a intellectual property thief or let someone else copy my painstaking effort.
