BLOG #5 Chenwei Liu

Honestly, I am weak in writing. In high school, I always got low score in Chinese because of my poor performance in the writing section. And I think this results in my weakness in English writing. One can hardly write well in English if he is not good at writing in his own language. Fortunately, my writing ability has improved a lot now in 106 class. I have nice professor and classmates, who really help me very much. However, there are some aspects I still need to work on, the most important one of which is my limited vocabulary. To gain success, an extensive vocabulary is necessary. As for summarizing, it is new to me and challenging as well, but also important. I think my ability to think about thinks differently has got improved because when paraphrasing, I need to think out different phrases and words. But I still have difficulty understanding long and complex sentences.

I am quite satisfied with my digital story script. Many people are not familiar with university life in China. And now they are offered a chance to get a general understanding of students’ behavior in Chinese universities. To make it an interesting story, I use examples of what students do in class, their performance in exams, and professors’ attitude towards their students. And now I think the first thing I need to do is get some impressive images to make it an engaging story.

Blog 5 #Views of My Writing in The Course Zebin Chen

As far as I am concerned, studying in this course exerts positive effects on improving my writing skills. I regard myself as a good writer in Chinese because of the easy access to resources and knowing the rules of writing varied kinds of articles well. However, it is challenging to be a good writer as a second language when facing culture diversity and different attitude toward rules of writing. During one month’s learning in this course, I enhance my summary skills and acquire knowledge about features of an academic summary. Furthermore, particularly improvement is the proper use of descriptive and informative verbs and getting familiar with rules about referencing to others’ idea. However, paraphrasing is still difficult to me because sometimes I can’t grasp the meaning of sentences and writing compound-complex sentences is challenging as well. I make up my mind to strengthen my editing ability and pay more attention to paraphrase.
When it comes to digital story, I would like to express that although it is not a prefect one, I like it because I devote every effect to make it an interesting one and add my own experience to the story. I correct grammar errors and introduce culture background when modifying it, for example, I talk about information about One-Month-Old Feast and One-Year-Old Catch of Babies to make it attractive to others. Moreover, I make it clear to see the conflicts in my growth and how to cope with them in my story. However, I wonder if it is attractive to others, I believe I need more feedback and make it an excellent one.

As a Chinese, I can say I have quite good writing skills in my first language honestly and proudly. But unfortunately, I think I did bad job in writing English essays because I have such limited amount of vocabularies and syntax. In my paper, especially summary assignments, yon can see many simple incoherent sentences and inapposite words only American kids may use. When I worked on my summaries, I often felt nervous and embarrassing for I cannot find suitable words and sentence structures to paraphrase what I want to cite. To me, an international student instead of a native speaker, it seems impossible for me to find another word to replace the original one in resource. Reading more English books, learning more sophisticated words, and doing more practice may be a good strategy.

Last week I recorded my digital story. It was so wired for me to hear my own voice because it was totally different from what I thought. Frankly speaking, I like the story I wrote. The structure is clear, plot is compact, and the story is quite funny in some degree. I like humorous story so I try to make my story be humorous too. Another strategy I used to make my story be more attractive is giving culture examples. These examples may not only cause resonance among the international students, but also magnetize some Americans to figure out the culture gaps between China and the USA. Nevertheless, nothing can be perfect. My story is far from an engaging story. I still need some suggestions to improve it.

The website http://esl.osu.edu/staff/bloch/plagiarism, discusses and introduce some complicated plagiarism situation. I think all the question is that college student should be facing and correct. I answer these questions; in the end I choose question 3 and question 6. The first question describes when you want cite article is secondary citation. What should you do? According to question 3, sometime we will encounter a situation, if our choose make a secondary, we will face to great risk. because we can't find original article and haven’t reason explain the source so we maybe accused as plagiarism. This is very significant when you face to secondary cite, I think you can’t make a secondary cite. Before I watch this article, I don’t know what should I do? The question 6 describes the situation that a professor takes a student work. Is this considered plagiarism? According to question 6, I think is plagiarism. Because copyright of an intellectual property belong to the author and is inviolable by anyone without the permission of the author. Even this situation, it is plagiarism.

When I finishing this test, I learned a lot of about plagiarism in academic field. But I also feeling afraid because I make some mistake in the before, I will change and correct these problems in future study. I think academic integrity is very important t, the first reason is we will response anyone copyright of an intellectual property, because this is author effort not of us. The second reason is when plagiarism spread of every college will take huge disaster to academic field. so we will observe the academic rules even we work in future.

blog 4 Plagiarism Tutorial

In the question 2, concept about ‘common knowledge’ is examined. As being new to a field and knowing all from textbooks, should I cite what is called common knowledge? Yes, I should. It’s hard for me to tell different from the common knowledge and somebody’s idea in the field, for avoiding accusation of plagiarizing, I will cite all the information that I am not sure whether it is a common knowledge or not. The punishment of plagiarism is the very thing I try not to counter. Though citing all the information resource would be a time-consuming word, in order to eliminate even the smallest possibility of being accusing of plagiarism, I would do it.  I checked the choice, my choice is confirmed as the safest one, it is exactly what I think.

Question 6 asks if my professor has taken something from my paper, is that plagiarism. My answer is really clear, YES. I am kind of interested in this question. Accusing teachers of plagiarizing students, seemed impossible in my former education background. In China, no undergraduate students pay too much attention on their paper and researching, and no one dare suspect their professor’s authority. The school stand on the professors’ side, But here, plagiarism is treated seriously whoever commit it. This is the education system I prefer.

After studying the tutorial, I have a better understand of plagiarism. And some of the situation is what I am now facing. As a novice in Anthropology, I got my first English paper assignment a week ago. This is exactly covered by  question 2. I would do citation for all information what I am not sure that it is common knowledge or not. Moreover developing academic integrity is important for my future business too.  The fundamental brick of business I believing is credibility and integrity. Any accusation of plagiarism or some bad behavior would damage the credibility and integrity even you didn’t mean to commit that.
One should learn to protect own reputation by improving the skill of academic writing.

The website, OSU online plagiarism tutorial, discusses some complicated situations related to plagiarism. Question 1 and 6 attract my attention the most among those questions. The first question argues whether it is proper to use one’s own past work to another new assignment. The answer introduces the concept of “self-plagiarism”, which does not count as plagiarism but still a kind of academic misconduct. I have never considered using my own work as misconduct before. This question provides me a new understanding of the academic misconduct. Question 6 describes the situation that a professor takes a student’s work without permission. As I conceive from this issue, the copyright of an intellectual property belongs to the creator and is inviolable by anyone without the permission of the creator. Even in the scenario of question 6, it is still unreasonable for the professor to plagiarize a student’s work.

After finishing the exercise, I learnt a lot but also felt very stressful because of the numerousness of rules. I realize a new concept named “self-plagiarism” from question 1, which indicates what I did before were all wrong. I am taught to this new rule but cannot totally understand it. Moreover, as the question 6 illustrated, copyright is protected by law. It makes sense and I agree with it. Even the teachers do not have the authority of using one’s work without permission. This rule is fair. All the unfairness will have its fairness, this is the conclusion.

Question 1: This question is mainly about whether I can use the same topic, materials and paper in different courses even this paper belong to myself. The best answer is ask my teacher whether I can rewrite the paper because this way is safe and permitted by my teacher. Simply rewrite the same paper is considered as plagiarism. Also, I can use another topic and write a different paper. Question 7: This question ask whether these three paraphrases are plagiarism from the original passage. The first one is the best because it changes a lot from the original one but doesn't change the main idea of the passage. The second one copies too much from the original passage. The third one changes the main idea of the passage. These two questions are helpful in my future study and career. I may come across this situation in my future study. Many GEC courses may require similar topics. I can not just copy the work I did before if my teachers require me to do similar topics. The seventh question is useful in every course that requires to write paper. I can not just copy the passage of other people's. I need summary this in my own words.

Question 4 consider group share ideal as a controversial topic .According to question 4, it asks us whether it is right to use other’s ideal without citation which is pointed out by group discussion . At the beginning I just think it is ok to use the result coming form a group discussion because it is not personal intellectual property; however, depend on the explanation under the answer , it is risk to do it.Question 10 examines  two ideals, one is the original another is other’s phrase depend on the original article. I think that although the second article uses the same ideal as the original one but it is re-write and well-paragraphed, it is different from the original article ,and it makes the ideal more clear and easy to understand it is a kind of revolution ,not the plagiarism .

According to the case study on the esl.osu.edu/staff/bloch/plagiarism I find out that we should be careful when we are using other’s work. We need consider more about the plagiarism. According to the 10 questions, which have different situations such as using the common knowledge, using personal sources, using group idea, paraphrasing other’s work and so on, I learn that the most safety to avoid risk is citing the ideal we used. Although it is troublesome, it is the best way to avoid plagiarism. In the latter life a well-developed academic integrity can keep the trouble away, and helps me earn a good credit standing

OSU online plagiarism tutorial provides a series of questions concerning plagiarism in university. In question 3, a secondary citation is discussed. When there is a primary source which is cited by the writer you read that is quite useful and you want to use it. However, it is difficult to identify the person who first owns this idea. Weather to ignore the citation or still use it remains a problem. The appropriate way to do this is to find the original article and read it. It is safe because the secondary article may alter part of the original idea. Question 6 discusses a situation in which a teacher uses students’ work in class as their own property. It is clear that teachers should ask students for permission to do this.

After this tutorial, I found these questions are common in university life and sometimes quite controversial. However the explanations are critical and benefit me a lot. The multiple questions may have one more correct answer, however the best way to avoid plagiarism is only one. As an undergraduate student, it is vital for me to understand and use reference rule correctly, as well as forming my own stance based on others’ ideas.

The website “esl.osu.edu/staff/bloch/” showed Tutorial question and explain the answer. I choose question number 4 and 8 as it was simple. Previous question is about plagiarism that in the class discussions about my part in a group mission. If someone gives me advise my work, could I have to use without quoting? The answer is “no” what I did not choose. I did not know that before. Still I have questioned that add in my paper the source from is. Isn’t it just discussion? Everyone could give advice to peer. If someone uses my advice, I allow them not to use citing. It makes person to selfish. Latter question, it is about quoting from Internet. When you cites from internet, you also have to add quotation. As I correct this answer and totally agree that do not need response.

In undergraduate school, if I discuss about paper or work, I realize I should use quotation mark. It looks very strange but I have to accept USA’s thinking. Also in business world, if I get a job in US, if I have a chance to report some paper to my office commitment, I should use quotation mark from group discussion. Quotation mark or citing is looks very important in US world.

1. Question: In your 106G course, you were asked to write a definition paper. When you entered 107G, you found that you had the same assignment, but the paper was a little longer. If you add a little to your old paper and hand it in, are you plagiarizing from yourself. What should you do?

A: We need ask 107g teacher what we should do.

If professor allow changing the same assignment, but the paper was a little longer. Then I can do it. It is the safest in all solutions.

B: Changing our old article and hand in it.

We couldn’t steal my paper, which is belonging to me. But this is belonging to self-plagiarism. In the OSU, it won’t call plagiarism, just a violation.

C: Writing a new paper and choosing a new topic.

It can avoid plagiarism whatever self-plagiarism.

In my opinion, I think we can write a new assignment, because we take this class just want to improve our English and improve our expression ability. So if we change 106g class’s assignment, this is no effect about our language expression. I have a good idea that we can write a new paper. Then if we have excess time, we could add a little to our old paper and hand it in. About plagiarism, I think that it belongs to self-plagiarism; because of both of this two articles are my story. If we want to change our paper, we need to indicate article where is coming from. If this article had published whatever belongs to anyone, we often should indicate author, citing some sentences that we have to illustrate it. Publish is means that the other people saw your article, they knows your point. But I think if self-article did not publish, so I think we need not to indicate where is the article coming from.

2You suspect that one of your professors has taken something which you wrote for a course. Is this considered plagiarism?

A: Yes

We write anything that it belongs to us; even though, we take in for a class. Copying a paper taken in class is similar to coping a published paper, both this two phenomenon are belongs to plagiarism. Also, the professor will be attention to this situation.

B: NO

This phenomenon is belonging to plagiarism. Whatever this paper is published, belongs to plagiarism. Because of you write this paper, even to turn in for a class.

In my opinion, I think that it should be called plagiarism. But if the professor indicate this paper where is coming from. For instance: authorarticle’s title. I think if he did it, it will not belong to plagiarism. But, if he did not indicate the sentences, it will be a plagiarism, because of this paper is not written by him, he cite student’s paper. So, I suggest that if professor wants to use student’s article, he must indicate specific situation. Who write this article which is coming from.

In the introductory tutorial, the 10 issues about plagiarism with the answers and explanations are extremely helpful to me. For instance, the fifth question is the solution when you couldn’t remember the original source of an exposition of some data that you have to cite it. It is said that you may not use the author’s research as your own without citation; you probably could find others’ opinions on the same problem and cite them with accurate source or change your topic to something else. Anyway, you must list the source as reference, if you intend to share others’ idea. The last question provides me with a great example of paraphrasing; also it demonstrates that it is possibly considered as plagiarism even if you just take the main idea of the original. It may be better to list the original as reference.

My major is Food Science, and there are lots of reports and scientific papers to do. The situation in the fifth issue is especially significant for me, since there is always secondary information retrieved for my works when it comes to the undergraduate research program and the graduation thesis. In the future, maybe I would become a scientist on food, and there would be great amount of papers for me to publish. That requires strong writing skills and inevitable citation. It is critical for me to develop academic integrity from now on. Otherwise, my research results would be unconvincing and probably considered as plagiarism in the field. The tutorial helps me a lot understand this issue. However, it still confuses me whether I would be charged when come up with an idea, which has already been published by other people.

In tutorial question 2, it mainly describes a question about common knowledge citing. In that situation, it has been assumed that you are going to write a research paper which focuses on some field you are not familiar with, and at the same time, you don’t know whether it is appropriate to cite the common knowledge which most of people have known that. As far as I am concerned, in academic writing, no matter what field in which you are going to write or what types of paper you are going to write, citing the resource of the knowledge or idea you used in your paper is always one of the most significant things you need to do. Because, to do this not only do make you an intelligent people who is aware of what is going on, but also make your paper well elaborated. Similarly, because common knowledge is the same as any other type of knowledge, it must be cited, even if you found it in the textbook, and also, in order to avoid of being accused of plagiarism, citing this material would be the safest strategy.

In tutorial question 6, it describes a question about plagiarism from professors. In that situation, it has been assumed that one of your professors has taken something which you wrote for a course. As far as I am concerned, it is plagiarism no matter who you are or what degree you have if you violating the rule of plagiarism. In this situation, whether it is an academic plagiarism really depends on whether the professor cites the source of this idea or contents. Or similarly, whether he gets the permission from you to use these materials? If no, it is definitely a plagiarism. Because everything you write down, even to turn in for a class, belongs to you or, in other words, you own the copy right of these materials. Therefore, the professor has no reason to use these without citing or getting the permission from you.

Through all the questions and situations assumed, I think question 3 which about the secondary citation and the question 6 which is about plagiarism violated by a professor, are some serious problems we student might encountered. Anyway, In order to prevent from violating the intelligence norm, I suggest that no matter what situation it is, always keep in mind that remember to cite the resource of those idea or thoughts which are not originally generated from your own.

Question 1 discusses the student in 107G is assigned a paper which is same as the one that he has done in 106G. The student fixes his old paper by adding some sentences and hand it in. The student should ask the 107 teacher whether he could rewrite the paper because it is the safest way. Question 8 talks about the student copied and pasted an article from Internet and put it to the class list online. This must be considered to be plagiarism because he just copied and pasted without citation or reference list.
I learnt from question 1 that I mustn’t submit the similar paper to two or more assignment from different classes since it will be considered as plagiarism. If I have to do this, I must talk about the question to the teacher at first to avoid plagiarism. As an undergraduate student, the situations in question 2 and 5 are especially important to me to avoid them. I think common knowledge should be cited because I’m not sure whether this knowledge is common to the people who read the paper. It’s usual that some information cannot be found, I think the best way to solve this problem is to find someone else (or teacher) to discuss this problem.

Question one describes the situation in which a student modifies his previous paper by adding some sentences and turn it in as a new assignment in a higher-level course. The safest solution is to ask for your professor’s permission before handing your paper in or write a different one in another topic. Question six focuses on a very special situation. A professor steals something in his student’s paper. And the answer to this question is definitely yes. Everything a person excogitates is related to copyright, no matter published or not.

I really learn a lot from question one. I used to think that it is absolutely ok for a student to rewrite his old paper and hand it in for a new course he takes. And I always do this. However, now I realize this is quite risky because of being accused of self-plagiarism, which I have never heard of before. Admittedly, I will never get caught cheating when conducting self-plagiarism because I steal something from myself, not from others. But I do not think this means I am free to do it. College students should form the habit of sticking to academic integrity.

The OSU online plagiarism tutorial discusses a series of questions and situations in or at the edge of plagiarism. Among those, the first and the last questions are the most impressive for me. The first question is designed to explore the scale of using own work in another work. It has an interesting term called “self-plagiarism”, which means it is not ok and can be taken as an academic misconduct if you recondition your previous paper or something for a new purpose. Another one is about paraphrasing. As I can see from this question, paraphrasing others’ paragraph also can be an issue though I was taught not to copy word by word but to paraphrase.

After going through all the tutorial questions, especially those two I mentioned, I felt confused about the plagiarism again. And also I still doubt whether plagiarism should be judged this strictly, strictly even in a weird way. When I chose the answer for the first question, I thought using my own work was such a normal thing. However, I felt kind of hilarious that the answer said this could be a self-plagiarism. Anyway, I know this is the rule I have to learn and follow though I really can't totally agree with it right now. Another confusing thing is about the paraphrasing. From this English writing class (though I think sometimes it's better to be called plagiarism-teaching class), the important concept I’ve learnt is to paraphrase when using others’ idea. But this question tells me that even paraphrasing is not safe anymore. These confusions are what I’ve learned I guess.
