This is one of the pictures I used in my digital story telling. It is from http://colorfulwallpaper.net/blue-wallpaper/open-a-window-open-a-new-life.html. It is a symbolic picture that presents a turning point in my story. My script for it is that “This experience opened a new window for me that enabled me to see the world in a completely different angle”, and this picture shows a vivid image of the new window in life and make people think about the life back and ahead. It is considered as an image IP that should be used with right citation and proper usage. Mine is not for a commercial purpose so it is fine. Compared to the IP usage in academic writing, it is similar that one should make sure to use the proper amount, citation as well as the purpose. The difference is that images and music pieces are not commonly used in the writing. On the contrary, articles are the most popular source applied in the academic writing. The in-text citation, quotation or paraphrasing, and the reference list are significant citation rules for writing an essay.
Digital story assignment did give me a deeper understanding of the appropriate method of using IP, and also help me being familiar with the media software and expressing thoughts visually and aurally. Actually, putting pictures in process to fulfill my story is similar with the arrangement of sources for my argument essay. Both of them needs a original idea and the details, and then using this outline or clue to find the proper images or examples in others’ articles to enrich our work so that our own main idea and issues can be sufficiently explained to the audience or readers. There’s no culture difference in using sources to demonstrate one’s own opinion, but just in the rules of citation and the way of using them.
