This is a picture in my digital story. It is from http://pic2.nipic.com/20090417/2303059_153429043_2.jpg. This gift picture is an implicit image used to represent the relationship between my parents and me, because I have read a sentence that compares daughter as a gift to parents. As a result, I select a picture of gift at the beginning of the digital story to make my point clear. This implicit image can attract the audiences’ attention about what the story is about and make my purpose more outstanding. Before I put this picture in my digital story, I need to consider the IP of the picture. According to the citation rules and fair use of guidelines, I cite it correctly and my usage is limited and just for sharing personal opinions rather than for commercial. Both the DST and the academic writing need proper usage of sources. However, compared to the DST, academic writing inclines to use the articles rather than music and videos. Therefore, the 3 rules of citation is an important rule to obey in academic writing.
This digital story telling assignment is a both challenging and interesting task. It does not only require the writing skills but also the oral skills. The process of making a video provides me a chance to utilize the concepts we learn from class, as a result I gain a deeper understanding of intellectual property and technology. Using pictures in a writing piece is similar to citing an article to support the thesis statement of an essay, as both of them are in risk of interfering intellectual property right if used without proper citations. Regardless of the cultural differences between countries, the idea of protecting intellectual property is still the same, but just as “Cheating across Cultures” states, the definition of cheating is different among different cultures.
