Blog #2, Some impressive experience in columbus from SHENG LU

Hi, everybody, it's blog time to share something again and, this time, I want to talk about some experience during this month with presenting some specific examples with you.

First of all, the most impressive thing I ever met in Columbus is the hospitality of people here. Everybody here will feel free to talk with somebody else even though they are not familiar with each other, however people in China hardly communicate with strange people in public. Just like a few weeks ago, while pacing on N High Street to find a place to eat, a old man who is walking the dog coming by and said "good morning, gentleman", all of sudden, I was so confused who he was talking to that don't even know how to respond. After being noticed by my friends, a feeling of happiness came up in mind. Indeed, people don't have to be individual or separate apart from others.

Additionally, I was stuned by the highly strong feel of social responsibility which people have nearly in every aspect in everywhere especially near campus. For example, the cross on the N High St and W Lane Ave is always busy and full of vehicles waiting for crossing the road, and to my surprise, not like what some chinese impatient drivers did, every driver here hardly honk the horn to urge others not even pedestrians, even when they were supposed to cross which presents very harmony social atmosphere without panicking others.

What's more, as a international student coming from china, I was unavoidably panic before coming to Columbus, but during the first month here, I gradually realize that it is totally unnecessary because I can not only get help from every people around me once I had trouble, but also it feels so great to be involved in this huge multicultural campus with a lot of fun, just like the splendid RPAC, and the fruitful resource we could get, as well as the delicious food around campus.

To be honest, I could feel very hornered to get the chance to study here and advocate my enthusiasm to this wonderful university.

Blog#2 Experiencing American Life and Culture

In this blog, you will begin to practice some of the skills of summarizing and evaluating. First, you should choose some aspect of the culture here in OSU or in Columbus to go and experience. It may be a cultural activity, such as a performance or sporting event (symphony or football game). It could also be eating out at a certain type of ethnic restaurant (e.g.North Market). Whatever it is go and do it and then write about it. Again, strive for a couple of paragraphs (250-300 words). Also, use language of evaluation, such as inversions and some of the different sentence types we have been practicing. This blog will be due Tuesday (10/4/11). Post a picture, if possible (please cite the URL if you have to download one)

Intro.

Hello everyone, my name is Wu Linjun. I was born in Beijing which is the capital of China and it is one of the most developed and ancient but modern cities in China. I consider myself as a "Old Beijing" because my family settled in Beijing since hundreds of years ago; moreover, I love most of those Beijing snacks which have already existed for hundreds of years as well.

My family consists of three members, except me are my parents. my father is a general manager of his own company and my mother is a professor whose specialty is sociology. Although they are extremely traditional Chinese people, they still send me abroad for higher education. I know that is love.

Next, my hobbies. For sports, I love tennis. It seems so cool that attracted me so much when I was young. The birthday present for my tenth birthday was a tennis racket and a tennis course schedule. Although it was not such a wonderful racket, I used it until the net broke and I keep it as a momeory. I like comic and animation as well, both the American style which tells about striving and growing and Japanese style that funny but somtimes educational. I even thought about being a animation maker in the future. Furthermore, I love eating and trying new food; one of my dream was to try all kinds of foods in the world and that's why I'm fat now, but I'm happy with it.

Nice to meet you everybody, I believe we can have a fatastic semester.

Xinyi Wang

Hi everyone, My name is Xinyi Wang. I was born in Shanghai, which is a large city located in Eastern China. It has many fun places to go such as Tianzifang, Hengshan Rd, Huaihai Rd etc. Although these roads are not as famous as Nanjing Road Walk Way or the Bund, I spend many great afternoons walking along these streets. Among all these elegant places, Wujiang Rd is my favorite, there are many snack bars and restaurants along the street. They provide food from traditional Chinese snack to western dinner. My friends and I have a habit of going to that street by subway and having some snacks after school.

My hobbies are various and cover many areas. To be specific, travel, photography, animation and drawing.
My footprints cover many southern and middle part of China. There are many great places such as Lijiang and Chengdu. Not only is the scenery nice but also the people living there. I also travel aboard, such as Europe, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Japan. Now I am in United States and definitely I will visit New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Among all the foreign countries, my favorite one is Japan, there are lots of reasons, and I will talk about this later in my digital video. Taking photos during the trip is also enjoyable, pictures can tell a story without sound, as well as show others of the world in your eyes. My next dream place of travel is Africa or New Zealand. I will be glad if some of you would like to go with me.
I spend a lot of my spare time watching Japanese animation. Some may hold the opinions that cartoons are only for children to watch. However, I would like to say that many Japanese comics and animations require a deep understanding of society and they are creative. Recently I am watching Natsume's Book of Friends, which is a story about Natsume who has the ability to see spirits. Interactions between sprirts and human beings sometimes are moving, sometimes are funny. This cartoon has a good balance of them. There are many characters from different comics which I appreciate very much and would like to draw them on my own. Although I have not taken any professional drawing lessons, I practice a lot by myself and achieved some progress. Following is one of my illustrations. Luffy, a character in One piece.

Please talk to me if we share some common things!

Hey everyone! My name is Yupeng Yang, a transfer student in Food Science major. Glad to introduce myself on this blog.

I was born in Tianjin and I lived there with my parents until I went to college. There are four members in my family. Besides my parents and me, it’s a dog called Yangyang. We name him Yang, which means sheep in Chinese, not after my family name, because he just likes a little sheep with curly hair when he has shower. He is a cute boy, and I love him so much. My parents both export garments to US and Canada. They go abroad frequently, they know the life in US and want me to study here.

When graduated from high school, I was thinking about what I was really interested in. The result comes out that there is nothing but eating. So I search on the Internet for majors related to food, nutrition or something like that, then I found

“Food Quality and Safety” and “Food Science and Engeneering”. Because not good at engeneering, I pick up the former. That is my previous major in China Agriculture University. In the third year study, learnt more professional courses, considering study aboad, I realized I want to learn more about the processing and the science, then I change my major to Food science.

I have been here for three weeks. This is not the first time I have been to US. The last time, I joined a summer camp of high school. It was a one-month travel. We took some ESL courses in Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania in the first two weeks. Then we visited some celebrated universities, like Harvard, Yale, MIT and so on. The universities in America impress me deeply, and that’s why I decide to transfer finally. The most exciting part is in the following two weeks. We visited many famous tourist attractions. Universal Studio, Disney, Grand Canyon, etc, I can’t list all the places I went, but I still remember the amazing screen in San Diego with royal blue sea. I vow to go there again someday.

I love the fresh air here, the kind people here, the beautiful campus here. I hope I could have a wonderful experience these two years in Columbus.

Introduction from Shiyu Guo

Hello everyoneI am Guo Shiyu. My major is accounting and I will choose Japanese as my minor. I am also a MMC scholar. In the last 18 years, I lived in Shenyang, an advanced industrial city, which is located in the Northeast of China. After a 15 hours voyage, I finally arrived in Columbus, where I will begin my future study.

I come from a happy three people family. My father is a man of accuracy and strict method. Furthermore, he does everything with patience. His attitude has contributed to the formation of my careful personality. Although my dad is such a serious man, my mom is an optimist woman. She is the CFO of a Korean company and has a strong interest in business. Under her influence, I choose accounting as my major. Even though my parents’ personalities are so different, they can understand each other and communicate very well.

I love appreciating paintings and drawing. Paintings make my life more colorful and meaningful. A masterpiece can make me think a lot. When I saw the Guernica of Picasso, I could imagine the suffering of the people under the fascism and gratitude for my life; when I saw the Water lilies of Monet, I could almost feel the peace and beauty and be thank to the generosity of nature; when I saw the Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe of Vincent Willem Van Gogh, I could touch his inner heart and feel his depression. My own drawing is another kind of enjoyment. Placing myself at a comfortable position, I always feel calm and relaxed when I spread my feeling over a piece of empty white paper with a colorful black pencil.

When I was in high school, I read a finance book about the Rothschild Family. It makes me curious about how can they get so much money and have such influence on the world. As a result, I search business news and continue read business points of Lang Xianping’s. Finally, with the encouragement of my parents, I choose accounting as my major and goal for working in some Investment Companies like Morgan Stanley. In the future, I want to use my knowledge and experiences as a bridge to connect the economy communication between American and China.

#1 Blog, Introduction from SHENG LU

Hello everyone, my name is SHENG LU coming from Nanjing, China. After understanding in these days, I do feel  happy to get to know you guys and I really hope the time spent in this class would be a great memory between you and me.

Having come to Columbus for almost a month, I found I'm a person not really good at communicating with people while american keeps talking with friends sometimes unfamiliar people without being individual in public, to which I attribute cultural difference. In spite of that, I really wish to become friends with you people, so feel free to contact me whatever you want to talk about.

Technically speaking, I should be a sophomore student in OSU, thanks to those transfer stuff, majored in Electrical & Computer Engineering because of two simple reasons. Firstly, it is pretty cool to be called "engineer". Second, I love technology. Unfortunately, in aspect of personal hobby, I don't perform very well, since I spend too much time on playing basketball and reading articles regarding those cutting-edge fancy electronic products, from my stand of point, I am willing to share if you like it as well.

I'm from a chinese-typical family consisting of my dad, my mom, and me. Though not too many things worthy of being mentioned about my parents, the one thing I'm sure is that they love me and trust me just like your parents did to you. So, don't let them down anyway and take care of yourself.

Talking about Mr. Benson, he is very trustful person through my observation by far, because he is always being happy to share everything beautiful in his life rather than keeping asking us to do this,  do that, and patient with everything whereas not everybody like this class, or, in other words, expect more for themselves.

Anyway, good to see you guys.

Introduction of Zheng Chen

My name is Zheng Chen. I am a freshman and my major is business.Specialization? Not decided yet.My hometown is Wenzhou,Zhejiang,China. I am a shy person to strangers but talkative one to acquaintances. Two days ago, I hung out with my friend Rebecca  and her suitemate Brittany who I didn’t know before. And Brittany is an American.I feel nervous when talked to her.So I kept quiet.Rebecca was totally surprised by my silence.Because when stay alone with her, I never shut my mouse and keep talking all the time.

I have been studying in wenzhou, taizhou and shanghai for several years each. When I  was about 10 years old , in order to live closer to my father who worked far away form our hometown ,I moved to Taizhou ,a little city located in mid-north Jiangsu. And I was sent to boarding schools there. After 4 years ,I felt tired of that place.I was fascinated by big city.So I moved to Shanghai.Since the first day of my high school life, I started to live alone.

Though this is my first time to be here , I don’t feel homesick.Years of boarding school life and living alone extremely improved me both physically and mentally.I am kinda too independent. My parents often complain that I call them too less.

My family is comprised of my parents ,my sister and me.We live in 3 places now.My mother and my sister live in wenzhou, our hometown. My father lives in Taizhou. I live in Columbus(Before I came here, I live in Shangahai.)This doesn’t mean there is any problem with our relationship. My father has to live in taizhou because his factory is there. He has to manage it.My mum and sister stay in hometown because we think Xinyu(my sister) is too young(about 3 years old,16years younger than me) to leave hometown. We want her to have the memory of the same place where my parents and I grown up and to speak the same dialect as we speak.

It's glad to meet you guys here!

blog No.1 Yisong-introducton

My name is Yisong Huang, but people in China call me Huang Yisong because there are differences between the cultures of two countries . I was born in Inner Mongol , but i have no relationship with Mongolian .I spend my childhood in Harbin, north-east of china and I really appreciate that I can experience the lifestyles of two different parts of china because I just moved to Suzhou south-east of china with my family when I was old enough to go to school. I am a A-Level students ,but I didn't choose British because of the admission notice of OSU .Truth to be told, it takes a lot of time moving from china to OH,and I feel like a fish out of water because of the time difference at the beginning. My major is Mechanical Engineering. I choose my major depend on my personal interest ,so I can't tall you a complex reason about why I choose Mechanical Engineering.
I'm the creator of "decipher band" in high school , and I play as a drummer in the band. I enjoy the time when my friends and I josh with each other. Every number in "decipher band" seeks for perfection in addition we are full of passion for music. They are friends indeed it goes without saying. we partook our happiness and sadness, and it makes me warm when I feel homesick.
I think that I have the best parents in the world , I'm proud of them .An interesting example is that I often talk about my girlfriend with them which is abnormal in most of Chinese family.  I still remember that when i was broken with my first girlfriend my father said"it is not a bad thing for you because you can have more changes to find the person you fit you best." My father is understanding.Another person in my family is my mother she is a work-woman so she is strict with herself and her son, but I'm lucky because my mother doesn't keep a strict hand over my study ,and what she focus on is the moral character.I love my parents so much.
I was appreciate that I can share my story with you guys.

Jiawei's Story

Hi everyone, my name is Jiawei Zhu, i come from China, Chang zhou, Jiang su province which is the neighbor of Shanghai. My parents' jobs are both related to economy, my father runs his own factory and my mother is a financial accounting.

However, i will choose environmental science as my major in the OSU, as i think people now are paying to much attention on how to earn money while they often neglect the current situation of environmental surroundings. Money can't pay back us an original forest, can't save the polluted water. I believe if a rich man living in a terrible environment, he couldn't get his life quality get really improved. Also, the significance of protecting environment is easy to see from the case of crude oil spilling out in Mexican Gulf in 2010.

It's my first time to come to the USA, the environment here is very different from my hometown. Besides the background of culture, the structure of city construction is totally distinct. In china, it is very common to see there is a factory near the people's house while in the columbus, i just saw many houses, grasslands and many public facilities. So the pollution is rather less than that in China. Now, i can have a chance to study environmental science, i hope i can learn some advanced technologies to help my hometown out of environmental troubles.

Personally, i have many interests, like swimming, playing computer games, eating and traveling. I have been to Beijing this may, it is the capital of China. In Beijing, i had a lot of fun with my family. I visited many famous plays of interests such as the Great Wall, Summer Palace and Zijing City. Also, the delicious Beijing roasted duck left me a deep impression. The above picture you see is the situation that i was enjoying the nice traditional chinese dishes, including Beijing roasted duck, aha.

If you have the same interests with me, i'd love to share with you and even we can do it together in the following days. Nice to be friend with.

Introduction of Muyao Chen

As you see, my name is Muyao Chen, which contains a strange Chinese character that sometimes even Chinese do not know how to pronounce it. As a result, my friends often make jokes on my name. But never mind, I am an outgoing girl from Jiangyin, a wonderful small city many people think is full of rich men, which is not true, hoping you head of it.

I am a freshman here, studying Psychology as my major while almost all my friends devote themselves to Business, Finance or Economy. Many friends say I am crazy choosing Psychology and they often show their astonishment to my major. Some of them think it is too difficult; some think it is useless because they feel it cannot make much money for me , and some believe Psychology is something prepared for mental illness people. Whatever they say, the truth is that I like Psychology for I am interested in studying people, figuring out people's thoughts and behaviors. I will try myself to study it.

Now I want to say something about my family. My father is a businessman and my mother is a house wife. She is a quite a brilliant woman but she chose to take care of me and my brother. I have a extremely cute younger brother. He is my little angle and I miss him so much since I arrived OSU. He is only 7 years old but he has gotten many prizes in piano field. He has learnt piano for three years and I am totally confused about his piano scores. I cannot image how difficult they are since there are so many strange marks I do not understand. I am so proud of him that I feel so lucky to have such a outstanding brother.

Overall, it is just a little part of information about me. If somebody wants to be my friend, you are welcome~

Yakun's Story

This is my second time to be in the USA, and today is the 19th day for being here. What's more, tomorrow is the 3-year anniversary for me and my boyfriend. So, what is my story for everyone to share?

My name is Yakun Li, a 20-year-old Beijing girl. I've studied in Beijing Jiaotong University for Mechanical Engineering for two years and then transfered here. What I said, say and will say a thousand times is that OSU is really an amazing university. I love everything here, especially all kinds of traditions and the squirrels.

You may wonder why I chose to transfer and why I would like to pursue my professional career in Mechanical Engineering as a girl. I would say, first of all, different experience really means a lot to me. Basically, I have passion to experience everything new. So being a transfer student makes me get both the higher education experience in a Chinese university as well as in an American university, which is pretty cool. Then, as far as my major, I love science and designing stuffs by myself when I was in high school. Actually, I ran into my boyfriend when we made robots together in the robot team of our high school. That experience really taught me a lot and led me to make the decision for majoring in ME. Although it can be kind of hard for a female, I believe I can do it, and do it well. "Yes, I can!"

There are some more things I would like to share. I didn't raise any dogs or cats but I love pets so much; I'm not good at any sports, but I love the feeling of sweating; I can't do everything well at the same time, but I'm a deadly perfectionism who try hard to handle everything perfectly. I was born and grew on a delta and my parents are both advanced engineers. Somebody said that living by sea would shape people a brave, straightforward and sensitive personality. I totally agree.

Finally, I want to say that I tried to shorten this blog but it still turned out to be a little bit long. Hopefully you will enjoy my story and, Go Bucks!

Welcome to our Gray 106 Blog! Introduction

I named this blog after the colors of our great school OSU - Scarlet and Gray. On this blog, you will practice writing on many different topics related to our course and academic writing. This first blog will be an introduction of yourself to our class.

My name is Eric Benson. I am the lecturer for this section of EDU T&L 106. I have taught this class every quarter for the last several years and I like the content which is focused on differences in writing across cultures as well as the digital story project we will work on throughout the quarter. I have taught in the composition program since AU 2003 and have also taught in the Spoken English program and 1 quarter in ALP.

I got my start teaching in China. I taught over a summer in Beijing and for 1 year in Dalian (University of Technology) from 2002-2003. When I returned to the US, I took this position as a lecturer at OSU and pursued my MA in TESOL (the degree for English teachers of speakers of other languages). I can say that I enjoy teaching and traveling to various places and learning about other cultures. I have also visited Hong Kong and Peru and spent a vacation with my family this past June on a cruise to the Caribbean and Mexico.

My family consists of my wife(a Korean-born American). We met here in our church in Columbus. She speaks perfect English as she came here when she was 10. I am blessed with two sons, Joe and Dan. Joe just graduated this past June and is a freshman here. My wife and I have enjoyed attending their high school extra-curricular activities, including cross-country running and band and look forward to seeing them continue to develop in college.

Our family is a cross-cultural one but we use English primarily, though we have all studied and learned some conversational Chinese and Korean. I also enjoy Jazz music and play the trumpet and some guitar. I enjoy exercising and watching the Buckeyes in the stadium and on TV. In the future, I hope to further my training and career as a teacher although I am still deciding on the area. We never stop learning and growing.

Blog #1 - Introduction. Now, please tell us a little about yourself and your family. What is your family culture like? Where are you from and where are you going? What are some of your interests, your future plans and goals? Please use paragraphing, capitalization and punctuation and always save all of your written work in a wordfile before posting (3-4 paragraphs, 300 words) Please also put your name in the title line of the blog so I can quickly identify you.
